This upcoming weekend, on December 7 and 8, our elite women and men teams will attend the third edition of the Texas Cup in Dallas.
Hosted by Dallas Team Handball Club, the 2019 Texas Cup will feature a total of 12 teams from all corners of the nation and Canada.
In the women’s division, four teams will battle for the title: SF CalHeat, Houston Firehawks, Alberta Elite and Alberta Youth. Last year, the event consisted only of a best of 4 game series between our team and Houston. The ladies, led by Constance Duvert and Athena Del Rosario then brilliantly conquered the title.
This year, the competition will be fierce but the same ambitions remains. “The ladies are improving game after game. The more they play, the more I see them growing individually and collectively” – says coach Tina Alavanja. The team has indeed grown into a real underdog, challenging the very best at the recent M. Lipov Memorial Cup in Chicago, and winning the BC Cup in Vancouver. With only two months left until the California Cup, the Texas tourney will serve as the last preparation for the first real milestone of the season.
In the men’s division, a total of 8 teams will compete: Chicago Inter, Dallas THC, Texas A&M, and Miami Inter (Pool A), and SF CalHeat, Houston Firehawks, US Air Force Academy, and New York Athletic Club 2 (Pool B). Without a few core players, our men’s team will try to repeat the great performance from last season. However, the road to the final will be challenging, battling against the young and restless team of Air Force, Houston and an unknown NYAC 2.
“This is the opportunity for players to take on more responsibilities in the absence of some of our leading players.” – says coach Danilo Rojevic. The team will also try to bounce back from their recent defeat against Alberta at the Chicago tournament. “After being undefeated for nearly a year, the last second loss against Alberta felt really bitter. But we’ve worked hard to prepare ourselves for what’s yet to come” – says Soeren Mueller. Needless to say, the boys will give their very best to conquer Texas, once again.
