2020 has been a very challenging year on many fronts, for us all. It has also been nearly a year we haven’t gone back indoors to play the sport we love, and we surely all miss it.
Back in September, our club firmly wished and had hoped to stage the 15th edition of the California Cup on Jan 29-31. However, and as you might be noticing throughout the country, the situation has degraded and states, as well as local municipalities are rolling back in even stricter restrictions. Schools, including the one where we practice and traditionally host the California Cup tournament, haven’t reopened since March and there’s no reopening plan in sight at all.
Given the state of things, and our inability to return to practice by December 1st as we had initially expected, we want to inform you that the 2021 California Cup is CANCELLED. This is a very unfortunate and sad decision, but the only one we can make at the moment. The California Cup has a long tradition and is known as one of the most competitive handball events in the United States. This 15th edition was supposed to be a milestone for our club, an opportunity to celebrate our community and welcome more ‘aficionados’ to the sport.
We want to say thank you to all the clubs and leaders who showed interest to participate in our event. We are very grateful and encouraged by your support and it is still our intent to stage a USA Team Handball sanctioned event as soon as local authorities in the San Francisco Bay Area allow us to do so. We’ll continue to monitor the situation and let you know first hand if and when we decide to stage a handball event in California, or schedule the California Cup at a later date.
In hope that the situation improves and that we are allowed to resume practicing and playing the sport we love, we wish you all the very best and happy holidays in advance.
